This week's Exploring Items topic is something Kender left lying out the other day: Dust of Illusion. There was only a trace of it left in the original bag, so I imagine he had already made mischievous use of the stuff. Come to think of it, I did get some odd stares walking around town earlier that day...

Anyway, Dust of Illusion is a multipurpose tool for disguise and deception. The magic of the dust is only strong enough to affect one creature covered in it, but this is enough for most purposes. Once hit by the dust, the creature's appearance immediately changes to one the user envisions, within reason. Obviously, anyone aware of the attempt who does not wish to be hit can simply stand aside, if he is quick enough. Additionally, the effect is temporary, wearing off a while later.

Dust of Illusion is not cheap, though, considering its single-use nature. For disguising oneself or one's friends in an adventuring situation, Hats of Disguise can be far more efficient in the long run. However, for a party trick or more devious pranks, the Dust can hit an unaware target, and its illusion is controlled by the prankster rather than the wearer. Finally, the Dust can be used to confuse enemies by changing the appearance of one. For instance, a guard may be altered to appear as a thief, while a party member dons the guard's visage for a short time.
