In Dungeons and Dragons, sometimes having just the right item is what makes the difference between being a hero and being another smear on the dungeon wall. This guide calls to your attention a few inexpensive magic items that may help you succeed in your next adventure.

Phylactery of Faithfulness (pg. 264)
A character's alignment can change over the course of his career as his outlook on life or his goals evolve. For certain adventurers, such as a Paladin, this can be a terrible occurrence. This phylactery, when worn around the neck, alerts the hero (or villain) whenever he is about to perform an action or use any item that would adversely affect his alignment. Aside from protecting the noble swashbuckler from killing a concealed innocent, this item can serve as a tool for the DM to nudge his group in the right direction.

Golembane Scarab (pg. 266)
Golems may not be the most frequently encountered of opponents, but they can certainly wreak havoc upon an unprepared adventuring group. The wise dungeon delver should carry items like this scarab for just such occasions. While worn, the scarab allows its owner to actively search for nearby golems. Additionally, if a golem is indeed encountered, the scarab-wearer can harm the golem as though it had no damage resistance of any kind against physical attacks. At a cost of a scant few thousand gold pieces, this charm should be in any rogue's back pocket.

Keoghtom's Ointment (pg. 261)
Few parties go in and out of a dungeon completely unscathed. Beyond simple hit point damage, adventurers can find themselves afflicted with any number of poisons and diseases from traps and ancient undead creatures. Keoghtom's Ointment contains a few applications of a powerful salve which fights off infections of both kinds, giving its beneficiary a better chance of surviving another day. A cleric who packs one or two jars can also use her spell slots which might have gone toward preparing poison- and disease-fighting spells for more aggressive or informative purposes.
