OK, so you're thinking… I know what these guys do. Well, I’m sure that we have all had DMs that give these to use as treasure loot.

Now here is where the fun comes in. This one takes two characters or even just one that has branched out a little. First, we absolutely need a rogue. Next, we need a mage that can cast fireball, or a rogue that has a scroll of fireball and makes his Use Magic Device check (DC 20 + spell level). The scroll doesn't need to be of a level any higher than the minimum.  You think you know where this is going…

With a DC 20 sleight of hand check, you need to place the Necklace of Fireballs onto the big bad nasty. If you make a 20 or higher on your sleight of hand, you have placed it onto his person. In the Player's Handbook it doesn’t talk about placing an Item on a character, only removing it. That DC is 20, so our group figured that it should go the same the other way.

Your target has a chance to see what you have done, but not to stop you from placing it on him. The only way he can stop you is if you don’t make a DC 20 sleight of hand. So now that you have it on his person, get away from him. This is where your person with the fireball scroll or spell comes in.

An alternate method of deployment is placing it at his feet; it doesn’t matter if he makes his save against fireball or not. You are only worried about the Necklace. The only down side is that if he moves you will have to pick it back up and do it all over again.

You now cast fireball at him or the Necklace. For this to work, your target must fail the reflex save, or if the necklace is on the ground, no save is necessary. If/when the necklace needs to make its save, it gets a +7 on its roll against a DC 14. Now, I know that it’s a long shot, but you keep at it and sooner or later there will be fireworks. Chances are after 3 fireballs he’s toast.

When it goes off, you are going to need to break out all your D6’s. Your damage can range from 11D6 to 58D6 depending on the type. Now, I don’t know about you but this would kill me... if I weren’t a rogue.

Well, I can only wish you good luck in trying this one. I know that My DM stood bewildered for about an hour because his big bad nasty was taken out within one round when I blew this off in his face.
