Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition
What can we say? Wizards have decided that they are going to be releasing Fourth Edition Dungeons and Dragoons. They have said they are making an effort to simplify the rules a bit. They're even making fun of the fact that their own rules don’t work, and are cumbersome. They have said that the rules of game play have changed. They make reference that they themselves got confused about playing 3.5 rules. Fourth Edition has been in the making for a little over 2 years now. Game developers have said they themselves are no longer playing 3.5 because it isn’t as fun as 3rd They talk about revamping Turnovers. Wizards have taken a more organized approach to updating Third Edition to Fourth Edition. Edition. When are we going to see Fourth Edition?
First Press Release will be at next years Gen Con.
What we Know!
Fourth Edition is “Evolution in Game Design”. Third Edition is still the foundation to the game play to Fourth Edition. Simplification is the key, making it just as easy to play at 1st level as it is at 30th level.
CharactersAll character classes will have a new power source. To say, if a wizard has run out of spells then they will still have options open to them that are unique to that character. Character Stats will range from 3-18 for all 6 ability stats. Wisdom will help Character Powers. Character Abilities will have several functions: At Will, Per Encounter, and Per Da.(Hallelujah Thread) Character Skills some skills will be combined, for example Hide and Move Silently. (who didn't use these together. We infact had a house rule that if we where hiding we where also assumed to be moving silently as well) (Hallelujah Thread) Character classes will no longer only matter at first level. Example: at level one you might get a plus two to a stat. When at twenty level the +1 stat ability doesn’t mean anything. They say that they will parallel the Paragons in Unearthed Arcana. Also a character class will continue to upgrade as you level. There will not be the same number of character class as there is now. Some have said that they are getting ride of 2 character classes. One of the cooler things I have heard is that there will not be a difference to the way magic users are played. A magic user will not be penalized for using magic spells. An example of this could be if a fighter tanks for a party that is have he was designed for. They are not going to penalize a magic user for magic missiling… Or a healer from healing… Character Feats have been reduced and simplified. They have got rid of the having to have 5 pre-recs for one feat. (Ex. Whirlwind) Wizards will have an abililtt called "wizard strike" that will injures and pushe foes. Warlords will have an ability "tactical acumen" which can give bonuses tothere allies.Source
Power Sources are the driving forces behind what makes a Character do what he/she does. Martial Power sources take the limits of one character class and push them past their breaking limits. They are based on skill and abilities. A fighter will cherish his weapon. His weapon will set what character powers are available to him! source James Wyatt's Blogg
Prestige classes are still going to be a part of game play. but when you level up you will still level up as your orginal class. You will not be giving up your class to be a prestige class.
Online Play
Fourth Edition has taken to the virtual world of PCs. We are talking about a 24/7 connectivity to a community that is centered on Dungeons and Dragons. There will be a graphical interface that will allow DMs to create their own worlds for characters to play.
Online characters will allow you to access them from anywhere with a internet connection. Also you will have the ability to make your characters look any way you want, adding armor and clothes to your virtual character.
Dungeon Masters will be able to virtually build dungeons by simply clicking and drawing a dungeon. They will have the ability to change the look and feel of their dungeon by adding custom lighting to immerse players in a scary environment or a well lit environment. On-Line Dm's will also be able to turn the tides of luck. The Dm sets up his base worlds with do's and don'ts, if you follow the does you gain advantages as you break the rules you gain corruption points. This will be a cool features to encourage positive game interaction. MonstersMonster encounters will not be one vs. four but four vs. four. This means that there will no longer be the four character group going up against one monster of equal character rating, but four monster vs. four characters. Roles will be assigned to monsters to give them puroise when fighting in groups.
The Monster Manual will group monsters by Roles.
Wizards is trying to make fighting monsters what it use to be. It was centered on strategies and not so much of a quest to just gain experience points.
DMingFourth Edition was deigned to make it easier to DM as well.
Party Experience has been retooled, no longer relaying on CR and Encounter Level. You will pick the experience (XP) you need and pick a monster encounter that fits the XP amount.

We are looking at online characters and terrain played in the same tradition as Dungeons and Dragons First Edition was played. One of the big changes comes from the ability to play live with anyone in the world. There will be text chats and VIP (voice over IP). Some speculate on Wizards' ability to out perform existing VIP systems that are said to be bulky and slow.
